A weird tale about the moral dilemmas of genetic engineering. Had a very strong start where you were introduced to film representations of what Sam wants his child to be. Unfortunately his later interactions were disappointing.

Fantastic! One of several in a short story series by multiple authors.
First thing I’ve read by this author. I’d consider reading more!
I really want to like books by Amor Towles, who is undeniably an amazing, creative author. But somehow, this style just doesn't work for me, and that's the case even in this short story.

this is a re-read for me. What i loved most about this story is that it forces the reader to look at the issues of genetics in a deeply human way. The POV of a father viewing the type of life his son might have using what is essentially a genetic credit score. What is a good enough life for our children? Even with advances in gene editing what does that mean for them?? guaranteed happiness??? I dont think thats realistic. And thats what Sam has to come to terms with. He also must come to terms with himself. What is he made of genetically and what strengths and weaknesses transfer from him. I see that many when they review this are left unfulfilled. To me... welcome to reality or uh speculative fiction, i guess. And I guess that it boils down to this. Every advance and every discovery is nothing more than a tool. How you use that tool is up to you. I'm glad that Sam looked at where his tools were being made and had a second thought.
