3 stars. Really great writing but wasn't very interesting. There wasn't much to it to me and I didn't feel anything for it one way or another. I think because the two previous short stories were so fantastic that I had gotten my hopes up. Jemisin and Crouch have set the bar for this series and I need to learn to let that go so that I can go into the rest of these with an open mind. 3 stars for the writing though and I wouldn't mind looking more into this author's work.
I wanted this to explore more aspects that it almost seems to promise: should we want to create our children if it means minimizing suffering? What are the implications of nature and nurture in the grand scheme of things? I loved the last paragraph, but I didn't get enough from this story to rate it any higher. That said, my Forward Collection final ranking is:
1.) Emergency Skin
2.) Summer Frost
3.) Ark
4.) You Have Arrived at Your Destination
5.) The Last Conversation
6.) Randomize

Interesting, incredibly like Gattica. The character work is impeccible. The second half of the story gets a little muddy and the concept feels overdone.

Same old message, same old sexism.
2 stars, one of them for the wasted great concept.
Maybe it's possible to predict someone's life someday, but the way is definitely not statistics. You can never predict an outlier using statistics and you should know at least something before writing a science fiction.
Of course you want a boy.
Of course your wife does all the works for you and let you make the decision.
Of course your wife chooses the name you want.
Of course you are not satisfied.
Of course you blame everything bad on someone else, takes no responsibility.
Of course every speaking character is male and the wife just a prop, talking about loss of female agency.
Yeah I didn't understand the ending because it's just so ambiguous but who cares, it's just the century old message make your own choices blah blah

Started off a bit shaky but quickly found its ground. The concepts were strong, unnerving and striking. I found myself thinking how cool they were. A story befitting this collection!
However the second half fell off the wagon a bit for me. It was a bit aimless and messy - chaotic even. It didn't measure up to the intelligent first half in my opinion. Maybe I'm just always expecting shocking twists, when not all the stories in this collection are necessarily that.
