Solid little novel, banger of an ending.

When escaping your life in Siberia, whether conflicted or panicked, you can use all the help you can get. This novella is so human, set in the bleak yet beautiful sprawl of Russia by train, with every character filled to the brim with enough non-verbal cues to feel like it's somewhere between play and silent film. There is glory in connection, even if it's only for a single, very long train ride across the country.

Read the original French version "tangente vers l'est". The evocative vocabulary was a challenge for my mediocre French, but it was still a propulsive, intriguing and deeply felt book. The two contrasting characters slammed together on a train, communicating without a common language, and finding a common purpose, combined with suspense and great imagery.
