There are a number of objectionable people in this book, and the narrator and his friends all agree that the main goal is to handle these people politely and discreetly.
SpoilerThe story thus ends with one villain dying at someone else's hands (with the real story untold), another (even worse) villain thwarted in his bad intentions toward the protagonists but free to wreak havoc on the rest of the unsuspecting world, and a third terrible person (accessory to one of the others) rewarded with more money. The hero and his friends agree that neither the police nor the general public should be warned about any of this and that, above all, everything should be handled politely. So extreme is this imperative that, even when one of the villains arrives as an unwelcome guest at the protagonists's house, making their lives miserable through incessant nasty comments, and actually spying on them (and they know this), it doesn't occur to anyone to boot this villain out of the house.
Everything in this book is so diametrically opposed to my sense of justice and the common good that it detracted from my ability to enjoy the story.

Audible version: It was fun to spend another few hours with Kit Fielding and his horses, though I did like the first book in the pair better. This one has Kit figuring out how to save the princess and her husband from a scheming business partner. He's still the same well-mannered, clever dude he was in the first book, but this one stretches a bit too far in how it has too many people relying on Kit too heavily when there were plenty of smarter, less intrusive solutions for the incredibly wealthy princess. Still, it was an enjoyable listen and I'm looking forward to more from Dick Francis.

The second, and sadly the last in the Kit Fielding series. The more I read Dick Francis, the more I appreciate and enjoy his work. The story may be a little farfetched, but it is so good to be transported back to a world where the good guys are always polite and civilized, and the bad guys are just bad in every way possible. I love how Kit and the princess react to each other in the series and really like the way Kit talks about horses and horse racing. A really good read!

Well, I accidentally listened to the sequel before I listened to the first book, but it ended up being okay as they could both be stand alone novels. Great mystery!

Dick Francis rarely came back to the same characters besides my main man, Sid Halley, but I do get to go another round with Kit Fielding. He's a good chap, too.

Kit is still a champion jockey. His love life is up in the air, and we have danger both on and off the course. Kit is riding for the Princess, and her horses are being killed in. I can hardly stand it. Kit is bound and determined to stop the killer, as you would expect. He is brave, and smart, and has so much common sense that I am a bit in love with him myself. Danielle, run, don't walk, to the altar with this man.

Some great surprises in this one and all of the great details you expect from my main man DF. 3.5 stars but rounding down because I have to choose one or the other.
