This is the seventh book in the Invisible Library fantasy series, a series that has given me a great deal of pleasure. The central character, Irene, is a likable and formidable heroine: clever, ingenious, loyal, resilient, courageous, astringent. The key fantasy element, the Library with a capital L which opens onto a multiplicity of worlds, is deeply appealing. The Language, also with a capital L, that the Librarians wield is a marvelous conceit.

Yet while I enjoyed this book considerably, I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous six. That may not be the book's fault. (I'm agitated by things outside the story's world.) I did, however, love pretty much every mention of Kai, especially the several scenes from his point of view.

3.5 out of 5 archived stars.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).
