Lou and Al ❤️ Lou, a hardworking chef and restaurant owner is facing the shock of her boyfriend, Devlin, cheating on her when Al, a food critic, finally tries Luella’s. Al writes a terrible review of the restaurant that affects restaurant-goers to the point that Lou thinks she’ll have to close her restaurant. Little to their knowledge, Lou and Al had a previous encounter where Al caught the scent of the coconut cake Lou had baked. Lou and Al later tour Milwaukee to give Al a sense of what the city is known for - food! The two friends fall for one another but are at a crossroads when Al, being a typical guy, closes off. Lou finds out Al was the critic who wrote the terrible review of her beloved restaurant.

Storyline is cute and fun, but not super creative. However, the food writing gets a 5. Seriously, this book made me want to spend a week eating in Milwaukee.

When I read the blurb for this book, I immediately put it on reserve at the library so I'd be the first to get it. And I was so pleasantly surprised. I thought this was such a sweet story of second chances. There was good character development and nothing felt rushed between the two leads. It wasn't necessarily deep and thought provoking, but it was just a lovely, simple story of two people you couldn't help but root for. I'll definitely be reading more by Reichert.

The romance felt weirdly paced, her ex was OTT scheming and Al didn’t grovel enough for destroying Lou’s restaurant. Although it also strained credibility that a single bad review would tank the restaurant that badly if it was actually really great.

I have little tolerance for formulaic romance novels.

Although this one has an element of predictability, it is very well written. I was constantly on edge that the secret would be exposed and spoil everything.

This may be a love story of the characters involved, but more so it is a love letter to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A book where I enjoyed the supporting cast more than the main characters.
