This book is a really beautiful exploration of death. I wasn't expecting to be quite as moved by this book as I was. Most of Piers Anthony is beach read fantasy. This book is most definitively not. It really is a exploration of the value and importance of death, and our ability to provide good deaths to those in pain.

The Incarnations series is Anthony's more mature work, but it still suffers from being in that bizarre zone where the characters sound like your grandparents but behave and think like teenagers (or some reasonable facsimile thereof).

However, the series is cherished and beloved despite its awkward bits for good reason: it's fun. And really, seeing as that was Anthony's actual goal, well done.

Today's reader will need to forgive very little considering the book's age, though there is one scene that might concern some as they approach.
