I can see why Faulkner called this a "tour de force", but there's not denying that in order for me to have truly appreciated this novel involved slow reading and sometimes rereading ( I'm still not used to the Modernist style of writing with stream of consciousness).
Story is okay, but it's the in-depth look into the inner psychology of each of these characters that gives the novel power. I have my favorites (Darl and Vardaman) and my least favorite (Anse). How these characters interact contrasting with the reasons they act gives incredible insight into the sometimes inescapable selfishness of humanity.

So good wow especially the end. Poor darl but the laughing chapter SO GOOD and cash for sure my favorite. He may be simple and straightforward but he seems genuinely a good person. Poor stupid dewy dell and poor country boy Vardaman and spiteful hateful jewel and shitty selfish Pa

It one of Faulkner's shorter works, which gives it a certain charm along with a precarious sense of whit/humour. This is definitely a classic. One to be appreciated for eons.

Not to my taste at the moment. Perhaps a closer read would reward but I was glad to be done with the short thing.

“And so when Cora Tull would tell me I was not a true mother, I would think how words go straight up in a thin line, quick and harmless, and how terribly doing goes along the earth, clinging to it, so that after a while the two lines are too far apart for the same person to straddle from one to the other; and that sin and love and fear are just sounds that people who never sinned nor loved nor feared have for what they never had and cannot have until they forget the words.”
