this was such an odd book and while i like the ideas that were discussed and the overall concept behind it, but i just hated the writing. i rarely knew what was even happening until i went to class and we discussed it. i understand why this was popular because the plot and writing style is very unique and impressive but i just didn't like the act of actually reading it. i liked darl and cash the most and anse can fall off a cliff.

“I cannot love my mother because I have no mother. Jewel’s mother is a horse.”

AND FUCK ANSE BUNDREN!!!!! (i will write a proper review later okay)

I love this book! I’m so grateful I read it with a group of people because it is impossible to understand without help, but once you see how clever Faulkner is everything becomes exciting and brilliant.

[8.5/10] Darl & Addie my beloveds you both deserved so much better. Nauseating, hilarious, a perfect depiction of the South in all its hypocrisy and absurdity. Absolutely flawless novel. God I fucking love modernism. Only docked points because it will be a very long time before I'm in the mood to reread it, if ever—a trainwreck (wagonwreck?) tragicomedy you can't look away from. I feel like I could analyze every word of this for an entire lifetime and still have more to find, which is my favorite quality a book can have. My mother is a fish.

This is one of those books that falls squarely into the category of "really good, but not personally enjoyable". I honestly did not know what was going on for the entire novel...like I did not even register that
Darl got sent to a mental hospital
. In addition, the various misfortunes that befell the family on their journey started to feel more comedic than anything because of how dysfunctional this family is. I'm starting to realize I don't like books with multiple perspectives, because any more than 3 perspectives starts to make me really confused because my brain is unfortunately very small. It didn't help that Faulkner's style is so confusing!
Nevertheless, once I looked up the Sparknotes summary and reread some of the passages, I grew to appreciate what Faulkner was trying to do. I don't often read books that take such a close look at the inner lives of characters, and I would definitely enjoy a reread of this novel a lot more.
