A lot of people have problems with Faulkner. I love him. This book was dark and heavy. I thought this story flowed in a more linear timeline (for the most part) than my last Faulkner read "The Sound and the Fury." This story about a completely dysfunctional rural family transporting their matriarch's corpse cross country to be buried is a morbid one to say the least. I love how Faulkner gives you crumbs of the interpersonal relationships between the family members and leaves you to put the pieces together to understand the dynamics of the family. Addie's (the dead mother) stream of consciousness really hit me hard. I wondered the rest of the book why the family made the journey in the first place and why they didn't just kick that pine box into the river and go home.
I liked it even though it was confusing, you guys need to stop giving low ratings just cuz you don't like stream of consciousness novels like idk that sounds like a you problem

Faulkner's writing always feels like you need to be on something in order to understand his writing and storytelling. I feel like a good bang on the head would suffice also.
This was an assigned reading that I had to read in my senior year of high school for AP Lit way back when, and I honestly could barely comprehend the meaning or message of the book at the time (and I promise it's not for lack of intelligence on my part). If it weren't for this being a class reading with the teacher giving us more information and context as we unpacked the book, I probably wouldn't have ever understood a single word of this novel.
With that said, I'm going to give this a 3/5 stars (which was previously a 2/5) because it feels deserving of it. It may have taken me a while, but I actually appreciate and understand the cleverness and artistry behind this novel, and the writing just fits with the overall theme and story being told to us.
Hard to say if I'll ever be a Faulkner fan, but this novel felt like it aged like fine wine overtime, and I think it'll just take even more time for me to fully appreciate the absurdity of his storytelling.

Only made it about 50 pages in. I loved The Sound and the Fury so I'm not sure why I couldn't stick with this one. I think the chapters were too short for me to connect with anyone and I was not enjoying the writing.
