I absolutely hated this book in high school (not as much as The Awakening, but that book has a special place in my heart). Mostly, I just thought it was boring. I got what was happening on a plot level and didn't especially care.

Thanks to Anders the Great, I got a copy of this again. Reading it now, I understood better what Faulkner was doing. His characterization is really quite something (and also something I don't remember grasping in high school). It's one thing to write a book from multiple points of view, but another to do that and also give each character their own vocabularies and intonations so that they really feel like different people.

I'm glad I went back to this one, even if it's not particularly my taste.
