I can’t wait to discuss this book with my seniors- I love the variety of points of view involved in this book, but it became overwhelming at times to keep track. I love the stream of consciousness writing as well as the secrets along the odyssey. I haven’t read it since I was in high school, so it was great to pick up again and analyze in an AP perspective. The symbolism, archetypes, and raw depth of characterization are beautifully created.

4 stars for style rather than content.

I really love As I Lay Dying, everything about it. This was a reread for me and it has definitely cemented this work as one of my favourites. Faulkner doesn't waste a single word, each one has a purpose as is placed in just the right way with nothing extraneous.

I think that the use of multiple narrators, regional dialect and stream of consciousness are combined perfectly. The combination has a huge impact and makes the story more moving than it would have been otherwise. When I get to the first chapter narrated by
SpoilerAddie (the only chapter narrated by her)
I'm on the edge of my seat as soon as I start reading it because of what it means for that person to narrate, because of the emotion and the insight that comes through their way of telling their story.

I got a real kick from seeing the similarities between McCarthy's writing as As I Lay Dying - especially when Jewel is with his horse, and the overall feeling of the story being an unstoppable force.

I thought Woolf was difficult to read. Faulkner is worse.

I get it - this is brilliant and groundbreaking and we owe so many of the movements of modern fiction to Faulkner. I love the reasons behind his bizarre choices and strange, incoherent stream-of-consciousness, and recognize Faulkner as a true visionary author. Nonetheless, I found this book needlessly tedious and it was not for me.

Book 3 for my Twentieth Century fiction class.
