I’ve never hated anyone, fictional or real, as much as I hated Anse…

Faulkner spins an epic tale, full of despairing and hopeless voices. The fact this was written in 1930 is astounding for its narrative technique (although also be forewarned about some racist language). Despite its status as a pioneering work of art, I'm giving it three stars to reflect my overall experience of it, because ultimately it is a bleak, cynical tale, and just not what I needed in 2020.

There is a lot to love about this book but I can also see the criticisms. The prose is so poetic and mysterious at times it's almost a horror novel. Each narrator's language so unique to them.

Still confused about Darl and the fire though.

I read this novel in one sitting, having finished [b:Catch-22|168668|Catch-22|Joseph Heller|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1463157317l/168668._SY75_.jpg|814330] just a day prior. 'AILD' has a similar grotesque feeling of craziness of the whole ordeal, but in a more macabre and tragic way.

I had high hopes for this book, but it was a struggle to get through. It was difficult for me to keep track of all of the different characters. The story was told from so many different perspectives that it made it hard to remember who was who and who was currently speaking. It really muddled the plot for me. Pair that with an extreme Southern dialect and this book was totally lost on me.

Great characters. Explicit, biting narrative. Faulkner is a genius.

There's something about modernist writing combined with the often phonetically transcribed southern American dialect that turned my brain to mush
Excited to re read this coz I'll probably appreciate it more when I actually understand what's happening
