This book is funny, so many good one-liners makes it fun to read aloud. Plus, it just so fun to make it sound like one of those old detective shows.

J.J. Tully is a retired search and rescue dog and he's ready to relax and enjoy his retirement on the farm. But then two chicks and their mother show up on his doggy doorstep asking for help finding their missing siblings. With a cheeseburger on the line, J.J.'s on the hunt, but the clues aren't exactly adding up.

A funny, easy mystery for early chapter readers.

Read this book with my son. It's on the Iowa Children's Choice List this year. Could be a good read aloud for any age group.

A cute and snarky kid's book. Easy level reading, definitely a beginning chapter book, but much higher level humor. I'm really looking forward to booktalking this one to lots of elementary kids because it really does span age and grade levels in interest and difficulty.

We love the [b:The First Misadventure|18668524|The First Misadventure (Chicken Squad Misadventure #1)|Doreen Cronin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1403390979s/18668524.jpg|26494251] series on audio, and the voice of JJ Tully on those is terrific. The voice here is fine, but not the same. This is a prequel to the Chicken Squad and totally from JJ's perspective, which was great. The mystery also had a nice twist.

Meh. It's a good idea, but the writing needs some help. I really hate it when an entire book is written with one-sentence paragraphs. It's completely unnecessary. The plot was surprisingly complex, but this left me wanting just a little bit of extra description. The book was fun, but nothing brilliant.

Global Reading Book.

This is a okay book. Just not my thing although I can see how some kids would absolutely love it because it is kind of silly in spots.
