The book is pretty complex. I highly recommend to take notes while reading. Mark characters, their storylines, important events, themes, reoccuring items (for ex. the paperweight). It'll be easier to look back on them (characters often refer to them) and to see how they are conected.

This book starts off strong and stays strong all throughout. It's a twisted adventure through life before and after a major pandemic that leaves the world in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic state. The narrative follows several protagonists throughout their life, and it's up to the reader to start figuring out how - if at all - their worlds all collide. Despite the dark plot, it's filled with hope, inspiration, and wonder as we see this new world through the character's eyes.  I was hooked until the last page, trying to figure out how everything came together. The only reason it's not a 5 star read for me is that I felt some characters were underdeveloped due to the constantly switching narrative.

I found it really tough to not get more invested/interested in Kirsten’s story than the rest of the POV characters, which made much of Clark’s section feel a bit dragging (sometimes it felt long enough to explore how they avoided malnutrition or how their governance worked or what was important in trading, but those were deemed unimportant). But I think the simplicity of the resolution
around the prophet’s storyline
made it clear that it was a me problem, primarily. It did feel a bit odd that everyone’s storylines converged
except Jeevan’s

It took me awhile to feel ready to read the pandemic novel everyone was talking about, but I'm so glad I did. I finished it and just wanted to sit with the feeling for awhile, even to start back at the beginning. I don't always love too many POVs in novels, but in this case, each perspective added to the world the author was building.

Fair warning for the few who haven't read it yet: this book isn't just post-pandemic, but contains a lot of description of how the pandemic unfolded that you (like me) might find harder to read in its familiarity.
