This book is unnecessarily long.  Yes it had interesting parts, but there were tangents and soliloquies that made no sense, long pages about Greek mythology,boring parts, startlingly graphic sex slipped into extremely dull parts, and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of descriptions of women found murdered in Mexico.  saw a comment that the multiple parts could each be stand alone books by I do not agree. Even as a collective much of it is confusing and nothing is resolved.
I guess in life things rarely get resolved but in a book I expect at least some things wrapped up.  
I only give this 3 stars instead of 2 because it was definitely a work of a lifetime but it took a lifetime to read as well.

as I read the final couple hundred pages, I realized that I would be a different person when the book was over. It was already at work changing me, and I felt giddy but also sad that the nature of this change was fundamentally mysterious to me. I understood how some dark age monk must have felt pouring over the esoteric texts, some unanticipated wisdom emerging, and the uncertainty that he would be able to receive it. I wouldn’t dare try to explain this unexplainable book, which can only be directly experienced and is therefore counter to everything else in the modern age. Five stars, bitches.

Emphasis on TANGENTIAL. But yeah I got it after like a third and loved it by the time I was on the last section.
