I’m afraid that words don’t do it justice. This book is everything. It’s also sort of nothing. 893 pages of everything and nothing, all at once. Part 4, the part about the crimes, is some of the most difficult and gut-wrenching prose I’ve ever read. It stopped me in my tracks for 3 months.

Part 1 was irresistibly mundane, undeniably human, and honestly beautiful. Parts 2 and 3 sucked me further in, but admittedly left less of a mark. Part 4, as mentioned before, was deeply disturbing and difficult, and yet arguably forms the heart of the book, the absolute most essential piece. Part 5 is the only rival to part 4 in terms of its importance to the soul of this book. Bolaño has an uncanny ability to make every single tiny little side character into a complete person. He also has the ability to take them away from you as if they never mattered to him, but I believe every single character in this book mattered to him.

If nothing else, this book made me want to pick it up and start over again the second I finished it. 2666 radiates with love, rage, nostalgia, confusion, and a million other things that I can’t wrap my head around, having only finished it 10 minutes ago. God only knows when I’ll do it, but I will be reading 2666 again.

This book deserves a re-read. There’s so much to it that I don’t know if I really picked up this time around. A haunting story that occasionally takes detours into less interesting stories. Overall enjoyed this.

I finished 3 books today, not even including "Princess Ellie's Starlight Adventure" with my daughter. I can't say I was very impressed with this one. The critics raved, apparently, but it all seems a bit ramshackle to me, possibly because the author died while the text was complete but not fully polished and perfect.
