This book is gorgeous! The illustrations are perfect; soft and soothing yet filled with movement. The narrative is just enough. My only qualm, which is I'm sure a publisher decision and no fault of the author or illustrator, is that the backmatter is on the inside back cover for the book instead of an additional page. In the case of the library copy I have, the dust jacket covers part of the author's note, some of the biography, and the photograph of Hosea.

Written about Hosea Taylor Jr., this story imagines a day in the life of Hosea doing what he was known for - bringing music into the lives of youngsters that lived near him.
In this story, we see Hosea set out to play his saxophone on the city streets and collect money that he is saving to buy something. We find out it is a trumpet for a teenaged neighbor.
Information about the real Hosea Taylor Jr. is found on the endpage of the book. I wish the publisher had made this information available in backmatter instead of the endpage because I had a library copy and had a difficult time reading around the taped on book jacket.

A celebration of the power of music, this book is a tribute to a real street musician from Rochester, NY who used his talent to spread a love of music by playing and by encouraging other musicians. Playful, colorful illustrations set the scene for this joyous book as Hosea reaches the day he's earned enough money busking to purchase a trumpet for a neighbor who's been wanting to learn to play.

The artwork was everythingggggg! And I mean everything! I loved that so many bright and vibrant colors were used to capture the story of Hosea. There is so much passion that is illustrated in the main character for people and for music. I think that the author does a fantastic job of including jazz like elements into the text that makes the reader feel more connected to the music. I believe that this was actually based on the truth life of an individual that was willing to not only give free lessons to kids in the neighborhood, but also free instruments. It's such a heart-warming story that I think a lot of individuals would appreciate.

I've labeled this as biography and fiction as it is a fictional account of a real person.
