4-1/2 stars rounded up. The first time I read this when I was in high school, almost fifty years ago. It's a charming story that I think ranks up there with Andy Weir's The Egg and E M Forster's Celestial Omnibus. Tolkien's "hero" is a cranky, impatient little man who really doesn't want to do the right things but does them anyway - with much grumbling - which I find delightful and rather true to life.

Makes me want to write more. It's a tiny story, but it has everything in it that it needs to make sense and be enjoyed.

This just goes to show that Tolkien is as strong in short form as he is in long.
