How can you not love Neil Gaiman? This beautifully illustrated tale was a great addition to the Sandman Cycle. A must read for any "Sandman" fan, but you probably all read it when it came out ten years ago. ;-)
Also: I would love any one of these illustrations in my house. I particularly like the black and white fox dreams.

Out of the two editions available for this volume, I prefered the one in the comic style done by P. Russell Craig, because I just love his artworks!
I love how Dream and his realm were adpated to fit the japanese mythology, in this fantastic fairytale, following a monk, a fox, spirits and curses, and of course, dreams. I'm really bummed that by this the Sandman series is done, but that doesn't mean I'm done with this universe.

I love this story, but the artwork just isn’t as good as the original. And I’m kind of mad at the artist for the dull version or Coraline he made with the girl who looked anywhere from 7 to 17 and the color palette of grey, brown, and grey.

This is a really great graphic novel in the Sandman series. The illustrations are well done and the story has the feel of an old fairytale or legend. Overall it is just a really well made graphic novel that I hope to read more of.

Coming out years after Sandman ended it was a delight to dip back into a straight-forward Sandman tale, very much in the vein of the single issue stories from the regular comic blown out to a larger size and a different format.

Written by Gaiman for the 10th anniversary of the Sandman series, The Sandman: The Dream Hunters is a beautiful reimagining set in mythical ancient Japan. The dream/parable-like character fluidity and soft, suggestive writing feel familiar despite the originality of the story. The illustrations by Russell combine the best elements of evocative graphic novels and the (Westernized) Japanese aesthetic that pervades so much of modern anime. As usual, Gaiman's moral message is ambiguous at best but hints of Buddhist compassion and Taoist reciprocation abound. The boundary between spirit and material world, between the desires of humanity and the world of dreams here is very thin.
