One Night of Scandal by Darcy Burke

A thrilling entertaining read. I just wished it was a full-length novel.
Lady Viola Fairfax masquerades as a man so that she can write for a magazine. While she secretly wishes to write more serious topics such as politics, she instead writes mundane society gossip. Jack Barrett is an MP who knows of Viola's secret mainly cause he is observant. I was just so pleased to read a hero who has eyes and can identify a woman even though she dresses up as a guy.

During one of her visits to the Wicked Duke tavern, Viola hears a rumor that can help her write an article she actually wants to and Jack gets roped into helping her. While the two investigate, they fall in love with each.

With 'One Night of Scandal', Darcy Burke tells us a thrillingly romantic story between two unlikely characters. I would have loved to read more of their romance than the actual investigation, but that did not deter me from enjoying the book. With the plots and subplots in the book, I do wish this was more of a novel than a novella.
Though this is part of the Wicked Duke series, it can be read as a stand-alone. This is a definite read for lovers of historical romance books.

This is the fourth book in the Wicked Dukes Club but it can be read as a standalone. All of the books in the series are great and this book will definitely make you want to read the rest of the series! Lady Violet Fairfax is an eccentric woman who masquerades as a gentleman (Tavistock) to gather information for the articles she writes for the Ladies Gazette. MP Jack Barrett recognizes her and together they try to solve a political intrigue. Jack was sympathetic to Violet’s need to write something of importance. The characters were wonderful; providing laughs, romance, scandal, and mystery. The story was well paced and entertaining to read. I do wish it would have been a longer story so we could see more of the characters and the romance that developed between the two. I can’t wait to read the next book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I knew after Viola took Isabelle to the Wicked Duke that her story was going to be fun. It’s clear from the moment he stopped her that he wasn’t going to be put off from her easily. Their search to find out the scandal was dangerous and I did not see the twist of who took care of everything coming at all. I loved how they just clicked and were able to talk to each other about anything. They way they got engaged was very different, but fit them perfectly.

Viola has managed to keep men at bay because of the past, but Jack is not like the other men. I loved when she grabbed him at the ball and how bold she was in every moment. She tried hard to please her grandmother.

Jack wasn’t looking for love, but it found him. I loved how ahead of his time he was and that he was willing to help her. He would do anything to protect her.

I loved her grandmother after what happened in the park because she did not act as I expected.

Well written, intriguing, with smart leads, and plenty of varying kinds of tension. A great book to enjoy on a lazy day.

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions are my own.

This is a fast and light read, but I couldn’t really get into the story. The political and historical references are plenty, though, and very interesting. Some of the plot twists, on the other hand, are a bit too predictable and not handled as nuanced as I’d have liked.
It takes Viola and Jack quite a long time to start to fall for each other, or at least to acknowledge their feelings, which makes it harder to have them grow into a convincing couple. At one point in the story Viola demonstrates a remarkable lack of trust in Jack and a troubling willingness to take a stranger’s word over his, no innocent until proven guilty sentiments trouble this spinster. I couldn’t really get into their relationship after that.
The timing of Jack’s discovery of Viola’s secret identity also struck me as unhelpful to the story, it doesn’t serve to paint him a true friend to the Duke of Eastleigh nor does it help sell the strength of Jack’s and Viola’s attraction/bond to the reader.

The Wicked Dukes Club books continue to be an entertaining series to read--it's so nice to have a new one out every 2 weeks, and they're such quick reads, too!

One Night of Scandal is a cute and sweet story--I really liked the characters, though the non-romance portion of the plot was at times a bit too involved for the length of the story itself. (More Jack and Viola! was the common refrain in my head while reading--I mean, I liked the espionage-y parts too, but Jack and Viola! So cute together!) We had to wait quite a bit for their "one night of scandal"--it was worth the wait, but still, I was beginning to wonder about the title--and their relationship issues (neither wanted to get married--Jack had a pre-determined schedule, and Viola had reasons) were resolved fairly easily and with minimum angst.

Overall, this was an entertaining, low-key read that was a perfect way to end my weekend. Bring on the next book!

I found this book to be more suspense then romance. I needed more romance between the main characters for this book to work for me. The plot seemed convoluted at times and I wasn't that interested in either character.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
