I don’t really like short stories at the best of times and these really weren’t the best.

This collection was bookended with two phenomenal stories and then in between there was a sprinkling of fair stories and good stories. A collection is always tough to evaluate since it consists of so many elements. But this is definitely one of the best collections I’ve read in the past several years. Maybe his dad has him slightly beat in the short story department, but I’d hand this book to a friend well before I’d pass along most short story collections.

Overall I did enjoy the book and clearly some more than others. The real horror and scary ones were obviously more favored. Some I felt weren’t scary and nothing really happened. Some were really gross and lewd and reminiscent of Stephen King’s writing. But oh man was fathers mask and black phone good - those are the ones I wish for more but also left me uneasy.

Granted I saw the movie first, but I think all the best parts of the movie were created for it (though the movie also has some wacky stuff that didn't need to be there). I honestly would have loved a full fleshed out story like this, but it's an interesting and well done short story.

This was my first exposure to Joe Hill. These stories and creative, shocking, and fun. Indeed, it is a good read. (Warning though: don't go into it expecting the main title to be completely literal.)

Interesting stories overall, some better than others, some that will haunt me for a while, a lot of the writing in this didn’t age well and it was hard to get past a lot of the time
