There were fast-paced scenes but I love how it was well-written. I especially love the wholesome scene on the last chapter

4.5/5 Schwab’s writing just hits differently for me. I will read anything she writes. What a gorgeous book. The pictures, the story, the atmosphere.

Did you ever read a book and thought: "this would make a great movie."? I did, all throughout this one. The fantasy in it felt like a hug to my childhood self. This was so gentle, so beautifully written. It felt not like a book, but like a whole experience.

it’s a good book but it’s not her strongest. i think found family is only a really strong dynamic when it’s a series or a longer book but it’s still cute

I’m a big fan of VE Schwab (minus Addie LaRue) and I thought this was a solid young adult standalone. I enjoyed the story but I just wish there was MORE. It was so short and seemed sort of rushed. I wanted maybe 50 more pages just to add to the depth of the ending.

Overall, I really enjoyed this creepy, horror-adjacent plot. VE Schwab always makes reading her books an extremely intense visceral experience with all of the descriptions. Her plots are always very very unique and I always enjoy them. I liked how the ending did not end up happy because it would be unrealistic if there was a happy ending. I thought it was an interesting artistic choice to keep this book open-ended.

Even though the book was incredibly short, I still was so sad about Matthew at the end. It was so depressing and really showed that even throughout the plot of the book, the problem hadn’t changed, it is still THERE. Kind of an eerie way to finish the book.

I also liked Olivia as a character but I was wondering what is the reason that she cannot speak? Is it because of her dad being like…not human or something? I’m not sure. I still thought it was very very interesting how she was unable to speak and it gave a whole new element to the story.
