3.75. I find reading about underwater searches to be fascinating, and it makes me want to become a diver, lol. This was a pretty good book, although there are other detective type stories I like better. I do think the series will get better, assuming there is deeper character development over time.

Sloan makes really poor choices. Why doesn’t she have a partner? Ugh. I think male writers struggle with understanding a female point of view and should refrain from having a female lead. I really wanted to like this novel but just no.
Part of the Kindle Unlimited catalog.

Liked:
-the setting, characters and family drama
-quick, easy enjoyable writing style
-audiobook narrator was great

Disliked:
-pretty unrealistic in the risks that she takes. She has a young daughter but risks her life like it means nothing to her.
-does she even work?
-the mayor just hires her on her word seemingly for a super serious mission

The idea was good. Sloan McPherson works for the police department as a diver. Her skills help discover evidence and secrets under the water and as this is based in Florida, there is a lot of water around.
I really enjoyed reading about her dives. The description of things surrounding her under the water, the unknown factor and the creepy vibes. It was well written descriptively.
The story itself was too unrealistic. There is only so much eye rolling I can tolerate in one book and this one was excessive. The main character just kept making horrible decisions, getting herself into serious trouble, doing things on her own like she was invincible and of course, she always escaped being taken out by the cartel in numerous situations.
It was like reading if Shaggy and Scooby were the main characters in CSI: Miami. Almost like a cozy mystery rather than drug cartel thriller. * shrugs *
It took me a while to get to the end with this one, I read another book and started another before I finally picked it back up to finish.

Nope. Not for me. At all. I did not enjoy [b:The Girl Beneath the Sea|48526390|The Girl Beneath the Sea (Underwater Investigation Unit, #1)|Andrew Mayne|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1571634473l/48526390._SY75_.jpg|73449316] by [a:Andrew Mayne|378554|Andrew Mayne|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1457742667p2/378554.jpg].

You’d think I‘d learn my lesson by now regarding Kindle “First Reads,” but apparently I haven’t. I don’t know what it is about the Amazon algorithm, but it (waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more often than not) recommends books that I do not like.

What started out as a rather straight forward mystery became needlessly overly complicated by not-so-surprising twists, countless loose threads, and family drama. The meandering plot and uneven pacing was compounded by Mr. Mayne’s pedantic prose.

First person narrative is not my favorite (unreliable and/or biased narrator and all that) however I can overlook it if I like the narrator. I did not like Sloan McPherson – which is not necessarily a deal breaker – what made it unpleasant is that I was dealing with a character that I did not like and a writing style that I did not enjoy added to a mess of a plot.

The rest of this series is a hard pass from me.
