Better than Shadows for Silence, not as good as the emperor's soul. It's an interesting setting but I probably actually like the magic stuff less than Shadows for Silence, it's just got more interesting thematic stuff to me, and I like how it hints towards the larger Cosmere world building. Probably will never think about this book again.

A pretty good novella. I liked the use of culture that Sanderson was able to create for this story, with a lot of his ideas stemming from Polynesian culture. I also found the two characters to be a fun dynamic, with our pov character being a very silent protagonist whereas the secondary character was a chatterbox. It made for some fun internal dialogue. The environment of the story was interesting as well, and I think my only true complaint of this is the pacing of everything. It felt like it really dragged in the middle for a while, but also I can’t help wishing it was more fleshed out. That’s mainly just a problem with the short story format, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

(Read from Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection)

A solid novella from Brandon Sanderson featuring a magic system revolving around birds, a tropical island filled with dangers yet facing external danger itself, and a protagonist different from Sanderson's usual protagonists in that he doesn't like to talk very much. I felt that the plot dragged a bit in the beginning but that was soon fixed. The characters were good for a novella (it's a Sanderson novel, of course the characters are good), and I need not comment on the excellent and unique worldbuilding and magic system. Good, overall, but nothing exceptional. The ending also had a strong sequel hook, but if I remember correctly, Brandon doesn't have any plans on writing more in this world. It also doesn't tie in to the rest of the Cosmere very strongly.

Not as strong as some of Sanderson's other works? Yes. Worth reading? Definitely.
