First, design is imagining a future and working toward it with intelligence and cleverness. We use design to close the gap between the situation we have and the one we desire. Second, design is a practice built upon making things for other people. We are all on the road together.
Una colección de reflexiones en torno a la práctica del diseño, pero que puede ser igualmente relevante para otras prácticas creativas, como la escritura, comunicación y el diseño de contenido. Me resulta especialmente atractiva la postura ética de Chimero, en la que la audiencia y sus necesidades ocupan el espacio central. Cierto, los objetivos de negocio también hay que tenerlos en cuenta, pero Chimero habla de responsabilidad para con los usuarios. Una postura ética diametralmente opuesta a la mayor parte de proyectos online, que priorizan el crecimiento y la interacción (las palabras clave aquí son growth hacking y engagement) sobre resolver problemas y necesidades.
Lamentablemente el libro no está especialmente bien escrito. Hay una sobreabundancia de metáfora que acaba por obstruir la transmisión de unos conceptos en apariencia simples, pero que son, sin duda, producto de reflexiones largas y honestas.
Pero no es un mal libro en absoluto. Es una referencia de la que se pueden extraer lecciones valiosas y que ayuda a tener una mayor conciencia acerca de cómo y por qué hacemos lo que hacemos.

I normally enjoy Frank's writing, but this was sprawling, self-indulgent, and brimming with clichés.

Very vanilla, no new or really unique ideas. Might be appropriate for first-year design/art students or someone in marketing.

I heard Frank speak at dConstruct last year and quite liked what he had to say. When I spotted he'd written a book based on this I thought I'd take a look. As a non-designer there is nothing scary or intimidatingly "designery" about this book. It's nicely written and a decent length altho a few chapters felt like they'd been forced to be a page or so longer than they needed to be. Overall worth the reading time

An humble and almost ingenuous way of talking about design. Not meant to be very theoretical but still very inspiring and profound. I really enjoyed it.

I'll echo what's already been said about this: it felt wishy-washy and a bit heads-in-the-cloud and never really said a lot. There are some good bits and pieces here, but overall it felt like a waste of time. Not so bad I had to stop reading it, just bad enough to not recommend it to anyone I know, and to go so far as to recommend not reading it. I expected a lot more from Mr. Chimero.
