a great introduction to the worldbuilding and to Celaena's character, her story, and her motivations. Got quite tragic at the end, and sometimes it was dragging a bit, but it is a prequel and not part of the main series so im cutting it some slack, would be four stars, but the emotional damage was enough to take it down a notch. RIP Sam. Sarah J Maas you will pay.

So I read this prequel before starting the main series. I thought it was ok. The first half was pretty bland but the second half picked up a bit.

i will preface this by saying i read this after reading Heir of Fire.

this book was definitely easier to understand and enjoy after reading the first 3 books of the series since some of the characters had been mentioned before. that also means it had a much greater emotional impact because there was already that context from other books plus i had grown to care about Celaena and where her journey brings her.

this book was really enjoyable to read until the last story in it where i was immensely stressed because i knew the fate of one of the characters already. the other stories are great to learn about since they are mentioned briefly in passing in other books and shows some of the cool adventures and also morose treatment Celaena was used to and endured before meeting Dorian and Chaol in Throne of glass.

after reading Heir of Fire and this, I am a lot more excited about reading the next installments of the series.

An amazing set of novellas. Each stood well on their own as well as building on top of each other for a crescendo of emotions. I loved this book. I read it before Throne of Glass.
