A great series of adventurous short stories to add some depth and backstory to the characters of celaena sardothien and arobynn Hamel. The first few stories feel more like separate adventures, lower stakes. Then the last two chapters/short stories are much higher stakes, impacting the wider story. A lot of fun to read.

i will preface this by saying i read this after reading Heir of Fire.

this book was definitely easier to understand and enjoy after reading the first 3 books of the series since some of the characters had been mentioned before. that also means it had a much greater emotional impact because there was already that context from other books plus i had grown to care about Celaena and where her journey brings her.

this book was really enjoyable to read until the last story in it where i was immensely stressed because i knew the fate of one of the characters already. the other stories are great to learn about since they are mentioned briefly in passing in other books and shows some of the cool adventures and also morose treatment Celaena was used to and endured before meeting Dorian and Chaol in Throne of glass.

after reading Heir of Fire and this, I am a lot more excited about reading the next installments of the series.
