Honestly, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Tamsyn Muir has perfectly crafted and curated each chapter in this incredible story. I loved the pace, even if it was a bit slow, and found myself truly savoring each moment. I adore these characters, and it is heartbreaking to watch what they go through. But Muir handles this in such a unique and humorous way, without losing any depth and honesty. I wish I could reread this for the first time again, even though I finished it moments ago. I cannot wait to see what else this author has cooked up in the remained of this series!! Thank you for changing my life, Tamsyn Muir. Now I’m going to go make the best damn soup.

Gideon the Ninth was my first five star read of 2023, so I figured it was about time to continue the series. Where the beginning of the first book is a bit confusing in that classic new sci-fi/fantasy world adjustment sort of way, Harrow the Ninth is confusing in a trippy, clueless sort of way where you as the reader are completely in the dark alongside its titular character, feeling your way to some semblance of explanation. It's a slow burn for certain, and not for everyone, but I was personally a fan of the way POV is used in this book.

Despite the confusing nature, I managed to figure out that
Harrow had willfully replaced/removed Gideon from her memory in her grief (though I hadn't known fully why or how, of course)
. The last act of the book is action-packed and so fun. It really sheds light on everything vague that had occurred thus far, so you get some clarity seeing it through to the end. All in all, solid second book and definitely one that strikes a desire to re-read it and see it in a whole new light.

This book slowly unwrapped it's secerts at the perfect pace. In each chapter you get another tiny piece of the puzzle that only comes together at the end and still leaves you guessing right up until the last page.
I also LOVE the use of second person pov.

I knew before reading this that the plot would not make sense until 2/3 trough, so I was prepared for the confusion.
The finale was something else and bumped my rating from 4 to 5 stars, incredibly satisfying to unwind all the what-the-fuck-is-going-on.
But: check trigger warnings before reading, like there’s a lot of really graphic stuff.
Also maybe not a book anyone should read during an active psychotic episode (this is not a joke).

Very interesting, but definitely a book that took me a long time to finish. A much more serious in tone sequel to Gideon the Ninth. Sometimes felt like it needed an editor to step in and ask if a long long section was really REALLY necessary, but Muir is one of the only authors I know who can have a character use every word in the thesaurus in one line and let loose with a meme in the next. Sparks joy ngl

Hm. Hmmmmmm. Either way, still love some disaster lesbians in necro-space!! Might need some recovery time before the next one.
