Such a cute story! Of course I knew that anything Julie Andrews wrote would be fabulous though. :)

I read a lot of princess books. This one stood out for me and my daughter. I want to buy this one for our collection!

Lil fairy princess Geraldine is just amazeballs.

She is comfy in her own skin, confident about who she is and what she wants.. most importantly, she tells others to be real.

I love this lil girl. In fact, the happiness this lil girl in the book brings me reminds me of one of my fave lil kiddos...

Reading notes:

- A little long for a Storytime, though you could maybe pull it off with kids aged 4-6. However, it would make for a wonderful story to read one-on-one. The language is a little more complex than your typical picture book fare which reinforces my recommending it to the slightly older set, but it's very flourished and has regal undertones that fit the protagonist's personality perfectly. It also has fun little quips that will make adult readers chuckle.

- A very appropriate story for Valentine's Day. It sends a nice message of finding and telling people of the positive traits they possess (even when that's kind of difficult sometimes) and that sometimes things don't go according to plan, but that it's okay!

- The art by Davenier is soft and infused with very warm colours (a lot of reds and pinks) making it very pleasing to look at. It has a wonderful level of detail that will, again, please the older set (though I'm sure young ones will be enthralled by it as well.)

Overall: A wonderful story with a cute message (that avoids being didactic) with cute quippy writing and art that complements the tone and story very well. Recommended for ages 4+.

Gerry the fairy princess really goes above and beyond in this story when she speaks aloud the traits of her classmates thaf make them "sparkle." This measure of kindness is something I hope all parents take the time to encourage in their children.
