Un roman indispensable à lire pour voir de l'intérieur la montée du fascisme / des mouvements totalitaires, les mouvements contestataires, la peur ou encore le musellement de la presse.
J'espère qu'il est au programme scolaire.

I'm surprised I had forgotten to add this book to my Goodreads, but when I reflected as to why I may have failed to remember it, I realized why. it was a stretch of a plot that had left my unimpressed and even a little skeptical.
A high school teacher is instructing his students on the second world war, and in turn, the Nazis. His students ask him how so many people could get caught up in such a movement, so he conducts his experiment and creates 'The Wave,' which is a cult in itself, and illustrates how the mentality easily sweeps people up, including his students.
I couldn't imagine a teacher ever wanting to attempt this. Not only that, but the details of the Nazi culture somehow just happened to work themselves into 'The Wave' without force. The students wore armbands, had a one-hand salute, and one of the members beats up a fellow student who just so happens to be Jewish. Really? These kids are swept into this random cult without ANY instruction, and they immediately flock to Nazi ideas? If they were being coerced to create a cult with distinct relations to Nazi Germany, I wouldn't have been bothered by it, but I was.
Even more... These students were not that intelligent, apparently, if they could get aught up in this and not realize what they were doing. Also, nobody else seems to be really taking action. In my school at the time I read this you couldn't even wear a bandana if they thought it was a gang color. But this school allows this cult to sweep the campus.
Without going into details, I can also say that the end of the novel was just as unbelievable. After one act, the cult seems to be snapped back to reality, and life goes on.
This novel, as short as it was, seemed to fail on so many levels. While it held fantastic potential, I can not help but feel disappointed.

I first read this in high school. It's just as creepy, if not creepier, now. It only takes about an hour or so to read but this one will stay with you.
