M. Hire exists on the margins of society. He lives alone and, for the most part, keeps himself to himself. Unfortunately, a prostitute is murdered near his house and he becomes suspect number 1. What a strange book! You start off reading what you feel is a simple crime drama and suddenly begin to realize that it is something much deeper and that the true focus is elsewhere. I read the first half wondering why someone recommended this three star read and ended the book realizing I had to thank him profusely for his five star suggestion.

Didn’t do it for me. A repetitive, befuddled sort of read. There is an essence of this book that is quite similar to simenon’s little man from Archangel, coincidentally which I had just read previously, but that one executes at a far higher level in my opinion.

A quick ranking of the Simenon novels that I've read:

1. Dirty Snow
2. The Train
3. Tropic Moon
4. The President
5. Lock 14 (Maigret)
6. Striptease
7. The Widow
8. The Engagment
9. The Mahé Circle

And to think there are hundreds of these things out there.

The top 4 are amazing, and I'd recommend to anyone. Lock 14 and Striptease are okay, and the others bored me to sleep.
