I had not read a book with zombies before, and knew that this would be a great read. I cannot watch tv/movies with zombies- too graphic, and learned that its too disturbing for me to read too. The historical component was great, the main character was great, the writing was great. I am just unable to read and watch zombie fiction.

The concept of a zombie apocalypse during the Civil War is so interesting, and the author executed it so well! I loved the characters- Jane is such a powerful and headstrong protagonist and it was so fun to be in her head as she makes a path for herself in this corrupt world. I was expecting much more action to take place, but to me, this book was less about fighting zombies and more about the politics of this new world.

A few words before I forget — wow, I really enjoyed this! Great action, world building, and story telling. This book had twists and revealed information up to the last ten pages. I was already ready to read book 2 when I was halfway through. I think it was paced well and set up a great foundation for Book 2.

But definitely know, it’s also angering because it’s post-Civil War, not quite Reconstruction so the racism, misogynoir, and just the violence of as well as irrational commitment to white supremacy is on fuull display. All I will say is that I wasn’t sad to see that some of the antagonists did not live to see the end of the book.

Like the undead are obviously scary and unpredictable but the scariest folks in this book are definitely the living — the white supremacists.

Was a fabulous read, the characters are all excellently written. It has humor that is appropriate to the content and section of the book, and lightens the mood where it needs to be. I devoured this book in one day, I couldn’t put it down.
