"Next year, I'll be the one who's operating blind. I'll have… a heart in braille."

Such a short, sweet graphic novel about friendship and the way you'll go to bat for them. This was a breath of fresh air. It's so nice to see more disability and blind rep in novels. AND THE MUSIC REP? I LOVE.

I loved both Marie and Victor, and their friendship is so nice to see, especially in high school.

The only thing is that I wish it was longer. Like a lot longer.

My Heart in Braille is a very sweet story about 2 high school kids who both have their own struggles, but learn to push forward with the help of each other. Victor is a 9th grader who has a hard time with his classwork and cannot seem to stay out of trouble. Marie, a girl from his classes, is suddenly going blind and is trying to hide how bad it is from her parents so she can audition for music school. Marie agrees to help Victor study so he can pass his classes, and along the way Victor realizes Marie might need some help too.

I liked the illustrators art style in this novel. The characters were well drawn and the style was similar manga but the character dimensions and facial expressions were a bit closer to reality.

What really bugged me about this graphic novel is that there were certain parts where characters were introduced only to be malicious, and then we never see them again. There was an entire section of the book where Victor goes to a party and the outcome is less than desirable that could have completely been cut. It did not add to the story. I also don't understand why Marie was auditioning for music school in 9th grade, and why she would need a page turner. As a musician myself, if you are auditioning, your music is memorized anyway. She wouldn't have been allowed to use her music. The thing that was most unrealistic was that somehow Marie's parents didn't know how bad her eyesight was. If you are a parent with a kid with a degenerative disease, how would the kid have the information but you not? I would assume they would have to take her to the appointments and that the information would have to be shared with them because they are her guardians. So unfortunately, despite how sweet this story was supposed to be, I will have to give it a 3/5 star rating. It's a story thats supposed to be based in reality and I just found to many aspects unrealistic. I still think a lot of people will enjoy this though!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.

This was pretty good, but would have been way better had it been longer. It was also confusing to read at times, so confusing in fact that I thought there were pages missing multiple times... Still, I liked the disability rep. Would have just liked it to be longer and clearer.

Such a sweet story, I had a tear or two by the end. Victor is a really honest character. He's so cheeky but all he truly wants is to do well and make people proud. Meeting Marie-Jo opens up his world a bit and gets him trying new things and making a huge effort to learn. The art is soft and beautiful.

The art style is gorgeous and the colour palette is lovely. I enjoyed most of the characters and Victors struggles with feeling like he'll never mesure up is relatable.
I wish the story was longer and the characters and the romance had more time to develop, marie-jo and victor barely talk in the comic before getting into a relationship and a lot of the storylines were started but not concluded like the twins parents divorcing and Victors band concert. I also felt like the dialogue could be improved upon, it might be because it was translated but all the characters talk in the same way, and it feels a bit unnatural.

4.5 stars

A beautiful graphic novel. I just wish it was longer. My Heart in Braille is a great story with stunning art that I think had more potential. Though I really liked it and like the characters I think there was a bit more room to dive more into each person.

But that being said I still thoroughly enjoyed myself and will probably read this again. I may even buy it.

Victor and Marie-Jo's short little love story is adorable, with special focus on their shared connection with music and how they both evolve with Matie-Jo's growing blindness  It's very sweet
