A fun and sweet read, largely predictable, but still so good because it reads as episodic and sitcom-esque. Some of the stories are a la ‘New Girl’ in their energy, which is unsurprising as that’s one of the author’s favorite shows. The last short story was a pleasure to read, and felt like an insight to how Bolu Babalola fell in love with love and romance.

I loved exploring a lot of different short stories. There were a few that I did not enjoy as much but there were some that really stood out for me. I found the stories set more in modern day were more approachable and enjoyable for me to read. I really enjoyed Psyche, Zhinu, Thisbe, Tiara and Orin. I think my favourite was Orin or Zhinu.

I loved that I got a small glimpse of a love story and a few I wish there was so much more.

Beautifully written and left me wanting more

Just delightful! The short stories are all so engrossing, I would happily read full novels about each and every story.

I think the latter stories, which were “new stories”, were better told than the earlier stories. The earlier ones struggled too hard with capturing the elements already part of those old myths and ended up producing flat caricatures of jock-turned-friendly and unpopular girl with hidden depths. The romance was fundamentally uncompelling to me; the male characters invariably told the woman character they were beautiful and then they had sex. Although they were meant to be told differently from traditional, white/US-centric tales, I don’t feel that they felt substantively different to me. Not a very interesting collection in my opinion.

I am a former Percy Jackson kid so of course I’m eating up any retelling of myths (if it features the Greek ones I become ravenous). Here we have a collection of short stories based on mythologies from all around the world which sometimes feel like epic fantasy and sometimes as ao3 AU fic, in the best way possible because you both gush over the fluff but also your heart aches when heroines are entangled in high-stake political games
