Wow. This is such an important book, and should be required reading for every coach (whether working with girls or boys, women or men). Even though Lauren was running for Stanford, even though she was a successful professional athlete, so much of what she wrote here resonates with my experience as a seventh runner on a pretty good small college team. Sad that things hadn't changed much between her generation and mine.
I admire Lauren's strength, her courage in writing this book, and her willingness to speak truth to power. Sports equity will never be achieved until people change the things Lauren writes about in this book.

I was looking so forward to this book, especially given all the top reviews, but it felt overall disjointed and I don't feel like I learned anything new. I like Lauren, and I think she has done a lot of good for women's running, but this book just did not carry as well as I think it could have had she gone deeper past the superficial.

On a tougher topic disorder eating and eating disorders is something many people struggle with. Part comes from coaches, other part comes from the unrealistic beauty standards set for females, it is time to talk about it. As a runner I know disorder eating all too well. Runner or not, athlete or not everyone can take something from this book. Success looks different for everyone and has she begins her coaching career is when she begins to realize this.
A fantastic book everyone should read. Fleshman shares personal story mixed with turmoil and gives advice and a path forward that is inclusive and rewarding. Read this book.

What an important book for all athletes. Really enjoyed reading Lauren's story as well as insight on the issues on disordered eating and pressure on young girls in sport. I never did sports when I was young so never knew the drop off in performance pre and post puberty. I hope we can get more support out there for young female athletes in the near future.
