A bit more explicit and gory than Sandford's typical, and less mystery. I wonder if he is running out of mystery ideas, and pandering to the taste for violence and mayhem that some of his readers undoubtedly have. His earlier novels, which always like police procedurals about terrible crimes, were much more mystery-oriented, and usually kept me guessing until near the end. The last couple, both Virgil Flowers novels, have revealed the "whodunnit" in the early stages of the book. Too bad.

What ties 4 murders together? What about cult-encouraged wife swapping, child abuse and incest. YIKES!

Holy cow. This one includes a cult and a last 80 pages then will have you rushing to finish. Virgil will have some bad dreams for many yearss.

The further adventures of "that fuckin' Flowers." This one takes awhile to heat up, but once they start going after the bad guys it gets pretty exciting. The big showdown and final outcome is sort of like a combination of the Ruby Ridge fiasco and the raid on the FLDS Yearning for Zion compound.
I give Bad Blood 2.5 stars for story, but I rounded up to 3 stars because Sandford writes so well. This one wasn't as much fun as the third installment. The subject matter is very disturbing, all the more because it's so believable. It's disgusting what people justify under the protected status of religious beliefs.

It's John Sandford writing with Virgil Flowers as the main character. What's not to love?

I like Virgil. This is an terrible case, but he rises above it all. The tension is strong and you'll want to spend the time to finish. I want to be a cop like Virgil.

The topic of this investigation was tough. abuse of women and children. Besides that the story didnt flow. I didn't feel the author was developing any of the characters.

My first Virgil Flowers book. Probably not the best to start with but doesn't mean I won't try another one.
