“Jim Crow follows you / from Alabama on to the Atlantic. / On the SS Mariposa— / a luxury liner turned troop ship— / a rope separates black soldiers from white. / You are almost flying too high to care.”

Great overview of the Tuskegee Airmen. The history is shared through poems. I really appreciated the timeline and resources at the end too.

While I understand the need to uncover the stories of African Americans who served in the military, I am conflicted with how today’s anti-war struggles might fit into the rhetoric. It made me question what collective liberation actually means in regards with the ever persistent American imperialism. With such power in the global stage, how relevant patriotism still is or isn’t. How does the US continue to justify its wars on so many countries?

A nonfiction book for youth about the Tuskegee Experiment - thr introduction and education of Black pilots into the war effort. Told in first person poems. Beautiful, made more personal by the first person narrative style. Some scratch style illustrations inspired by photos of the time.

Loved it - free verse, second person, great artwork. Does a great job of showing the accomplishment of the Airmen and their drive while still showing the oppressive racism that surrounded and continued. Also nice call-outs to other African Americans involved in WWII including black nurses, etc.

This small package packs a powerful punch. This nonfiction in verse is written in the second person, putting the reader right in the middle of the action while highlighting the many accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen. Hand this book to kids interested in WWII and military history.

The tale of the Tuskegee Airmen via verse, rather than prose. Poems were solid, illustrations fit the bill. Nicely done.
