Unclear worldbuilding and unbearably quirky, "ugly," social outcast main character. I can't like the main character if she can't even find anything to like about herself.

Super incredibly light spoiler ahead: This was my first true 5⭐️ read of the year. Some describe this book as a beauty and the beast retelling, but I think that undersells it immensely. This book has so many fairytales woven in to it. The love story to me was so perfect and real. The mystery was genuinely hard to figure out, I did predict a couple things later on. I was glued to this book and I think it may haunt me for a while. I want to say my only gripe was how the “maybe I’ll be wanted in a new place” idea Mina had was repeated over and over again and it took her so long to.. find clarity? But, at the same time, this whole journey was so true to the human experience, that anything less would have felt inauthentic.
