One of the greatest works of fantasy I've come across.
When One Piece is finished, Oda will go down as one of the greats (if he isn't one already).
He is a genius among geniuses. There are others at his level of storytelling, or close to, but they lag behind in consistency of quality and output. They take breaks, they overwork themselves, they write a bad arc or two. Creating on this level for so long seems impossible for everybody except Oda.
He is the perfect storm of talent and hard work.
I would urge anyone to try and read One Piece even if you have never read a manga or a book in your life.

Some of my friends have touted this series as the best for a long time, but I was always intimidated by its scope. Then, one fateful day, I played a game with some of my fellow bookworms: we'd each read the first book recommended to us via social media. And what do you know? I got Romance Dawn. (It could've been a lot worse; one of my friends got House of Leaves.)
I gotta admit, I get the hype now. It's unabashedly absurd, and I kind of love that about it. There's suspending your disbelief, and there's throwing it in the garbage, and I appreciate a story that can pull that off to tell a rollicking good story. Some of the plot twists legitimately got me, too, like
I'm sure I'll be reading this into my 30s if I want any hope of catching up to the present day, but that's not such a bad problem to have. Onto vol. 2 I go!!!

Koby getting shot. I was also fully expecting him to join Luffy's crew, and still haven't given up my suspicion that that will happen, but even still, I didn't think he'd join the navy in the end.I'm sure I'll be reading this into my 30s if I want any hope of catching up to the present day, but that's not such a bad problem to have.
