This may be one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, gorgeous in its imagery, rich in its storytelling, and achingly lovely.

I love big sprawling stories like this. Thought this was just okay. A lot of anecdotes strung together rather than a big arc that all came together in a very satisfying way in the end.

Well I thought Elif couldn't write better than The Forty Rules of Love but take a bow.
The plot going back to 16th Century CE Ottoman Empire in Turkey, this novel takes the readers back to the days when there were no giant mosques in Istanbul that we see today. The book is made up of many episodes of events from history where Jahan (an Indian mahout) who becomes an apprentice to Mimar Sinan and works as an architect along with his three fellows and an elephant. Togather they build mosques, monuments, observatory and tombs which number in hundreds and every single of them is state of the art. Author has kept in mind the timeline of actual events while writing this and adjusted the plot accordingly.
The story is jack of all trades when seen from any perspective of history, love, selflessness, spirituality and of course apprenticeship.
