One of the greatest book I’ve ever read. Absolutely beautiful. It feels like I left a part of my soul through those pages that I’m never going to recover. Elif Shafak is truly the best author of our time

An exciting read centering on Turkish tradespeople in 16th century Istanbul—a description that applies not just to this book, but to one of my perennial favorites My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. I’m sure that reading them in proximity would yield multiplicative insights, as each charts very particular courses through a period in which simple class differences begat extremely different life outcomes. (sound familiar?)
The most thought provoking component of this largely straight-ahead adventure was the interplay between architecture designed for city beautification by the royal family, and the effect that development has on the public vis a vis displacement, class difference, and public good. These discussions weigh intently on Istanbul and all global cities to this day, and seeing some level of nuance on this topic was refreshing and exciting.
Despite some stunning unsuccessful sex scenes and underworked characterizations, this book remains a worthy read.

For an art and world history lover, this is a great tale.
You have architecture, painting, astronomy in India, Ottoman Empire, Rome, etc.
A couple of loose ends left hanging and a beginning that took a little while to get into for which I withheld one star, but well worth the length of the read.
