The parts before she met Adam were best. Less than 40 minutes on livrivox.

The beginning was good, I even thought that was better than Adam's diary. However got disappointing very soon - repetitive, superficial, artificial, something written just as a bad sequel. But, one can still see the real master behind - maybe old, maybe sexist, maybe not so creative - but definitely master.

As an avid reader and great fan of Mark Twain, I initially chose to read Eve's Diary expecting the traditional satirical wit. My interest was further piqued when I discovered the book had been banned in 1906. It wasn't until after I finished reading that I discovered the primary reason for its ban was the nude illustrations of Eve, not the content. Although I can imagine many were outraged at Eve's often flippant persona, I found it to be quite amusing at the beginning. After the first few pages, however, the tone shifts from lighthearted to more contemplative and melancholic as Eve reflects on her surroundings, the animals, and especially, Adam. Having known that Twain had already lost his wife when this book was written helps in understanding the last few lines:

"But if one of us must go first, it is my prayer that it shall be I; for he is strong, I am weak, I am not so necessary to him as he is to me - life without him would not be life; how could I endure it?"

This book is not so much a satire on the first woman, but a tribute to his wife.

Eve's Diary
By Mark Twain
Narrated by Gunnar Qualen, Jenna St Claire

There are days the I love to come back to the classics, and no one can write like Mark Twain. His ingenuity always intrigues me and this comical story is just one of his many gems. We all know the story of Adam and Eve, but has it ever been looked at from Eve's point of view? Quick witted, smart and a bit naive, she listens to the commands of her partner and easily gives a great insight to how she may have felt. Is it a true accounting? Of course we will never know, but it is a sshort, fun escape from reality and made think with a smile on my face.

Gunnar Qualen and Jenna St Claire voice this short and they are fabulous. From Adam's point of view, we have Qualen popping in giving his order and critiques with a commanding sound. But Jenna St Claire is the one that had me smiling. Each thought and idea is given with just as I would have been thinking if I had been talked to as Eve was. Her relatable character gave all the emotions and together these two created magic.

such a wholesome love story !!! at first, i was genuinely confused about what this book is about, but after finding out it’s a story about eve, the first woman and her life in the garden, everything makes sense. mark twain writes an interesting take on the garden of eden, gender, and relationships.

“i wish i could make him understand that a loving good heart is riches enough, and that without it intellect is poverty.”
