It’s not that I hated it, I just had no idea what was going on, also it had no tone or tenor I could get a handle on.

Honest and endearing portrait of Western Sydney, and how it's viewed by its inhabitants and outsiders. A vignette into the lives of those living on the margins, whether that's 'queers', 'reffos' or senile elderly.
Full of pain, paranoia, addiction and trauma both physical and emotional, Down the Hume is an enticing read.

An incredibly strong debut, yet still very frustrating. Polites' has a remarkably distinctive voice, but it won't appeal to everyone- I had to work hard to get on board with his short, clipped prose. The plot is haphazard and non-existent until the last pages; however, if the intention is to get readers to go back and reread everything in light of this twist, I was too bamboozled by the book to want to read it again.

Unrated for now bc any rating I could give it feels like a disservice. I liked it but it’s not necessarily enjoyable or happy or satisfying.
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Toxic relationship, Drug abuse, and Sexual content

This is a entertaining read with a great turn of phrase exploring a young Greek man mediating his sexual identity with the cultural expectations of his family. Polites excels at creating a sense of place and the western suburbs of Sydney came alive with his prose.
