This book is definitely not for someone squeamish, as it goes into lots of detail about a few less-than-pleasing topics. Once you can get past that, "Salvage the Bones" was an ok read, although the changing pace made it difficult to sit down and read sometimes. This was a good book, but definitely not one of my favorites.

Written with incredible vividness, Ward has a truly a unique narrator in Esch. The effortlessness in expressions celebrates the malleability of language. I found myself gasping in awe at some passages. The cost of survival-needs induced by poverty through the loss of affection and hardening of the heart was explored, & depicted through parent-child & familial bonds - also, through the experience of first love. Although the lyricism did at times suspended the flow of the story (i.e. plot), it wasn't highly disruptive & the solid ending more than made-up for it.

When I first picked this book up I didn’t know much about it. I thought it would be about a family and how they survived Hurricane Katrina, however it is so much more than that. In fact, the storm doesn’t arrive until the final couple chapters. This story was hard and raw, but also beautiful and deep. I almost put this book down after the first chapter; it just didn’t grip me right away. But I am so glad I didn’t.

This writing is incredibly evocative. It is a hard book to read because of the subject matter, but the characters are just so vivid and heart wrenching that I loved it even when I didn't like it. Warning, it is very disturbing if you are an animal lover, but it should be disturbing if you are a person lover too, and maybe that is the point. I was very attached to these characters and invested in their outcomes despite loathing what some of them were doing. The book made me consider things from a different perspective.
