Lark is a human who must solve a Labyrinth created by the Fae, Cerulean as penance for trespassing.

“There are three rules to surviving the Fae—and I’m about to break every single one.
Rule #1. Never cross into Faerie.
Rule #2: Never bargain with a Fae.
Rule #3: Never fall for the enemy.”

I love the concept of this book (I’m a huge fan of the movie The Labyrinth) and the story and dynamic between Lark and Cerulean gets better as the book goes on.

Whilst we got to see glimpses of the Labyrinth, I wish there were more twists and tricks. We only encountered a couple obstacles during the journey.

I personally thought the book was full of purple prose which made it really difficult to read. I found myself putting the book down and not rushing to pick it back up.

All that being said, the story and the dynamic of the main characters was realy good. I’m looking forward to reading book 2 and the sisters’ stories.

“but it wasn’t until after I left you that I fell in love.”

Okay, hear me out…

Was it the best writing? No
Was it the best storytelling? No
Did it have the best plot? No
Did it feel like the author wrote with a thesaurus next to her the entire time? Yes
Did it feel like there was some type of goal of how many “big” words the author got to use per sentence? Yes
Was the word “digit” overused? Yes
Did I still finish the book? Not without an eye roll or 3,000.

And,

I ended up loving the story, well, partially, I still very much hated the flowery, riddle filled writing but, after pushing through, the writing, well, it made sense to the story and more it made sense to the characters. Still, it was difficult to fully immerse myself until the last few chapters.

I stayed and pushed through for Cerulean alone. I liked Lark a lot but the mystery she painted of Cerulean made him all the more appealing. I’m glad the epilogue was written from his perspective.

The story is tricky, the twist and turns not super mysterious but fun enough that you can look past the parts that are obvious.

It’s been a little bit since I enjoyed a fae related story and while this one wasn’t the best it also wasn’t the worst.

I don’t think I’ll dive in to the next book immediately. I don’t think I can handle more flowery, purple prose writing at this moment. But, I will read the next book some day.
