A collection of so-so tales taken from typical angles of the geekdom. There were a couple gems, though. Here’s my breakdown rating for the six stories:

A Rose Watered with Blood
2/5

Not a great one to start with. An unstatisfying mix of haunted ship meets space warriors. The ”twist” was not surprising in the least.

One, Untended
3/5

Compared to the first story, this was a solid dungeon adventure that had me stoked for the first half. I was like, ”Yeahh let’s kick some evil priest goblin asses and LOOOOOOT!” and then it just petered out. Lame!

Blood Gold
2/5

Ugh. If cheese survived exposure to molten lava, this world would be covered in it. A very uninventive background story on a specific kind of fyreslayer, which I think was supposed to give them a dangerously mean edge. Really, they just come out of it looking like brawny eejits.

Man of Iron
3/5

I actually really enjoyed the main character in this, an ancient android that reminded me— in a very endearing way— of our beloved OG AI, C-3P0.

The Marauder Lives
4/5

ALRIGHT! This is what I’m talking about! A story with strong characters, a great backstory. Not to mention the whole time I was trying to figure out if it was me or the main character that was delusional.

Mercy
3/5

I was excited to be going on a second adventure with Sister Augusta, after my initiation with the Adepta Sororitas in the story Forsaken, included in the Black Library Celebration 2020 anthology. Sadly, this one was less exhilirating. Again, her team of badass soldier nuns are stuck with orks in a derelict edifice of worship. Augusta remains a strong, impressive main character nonetheless, and this has confirmed that I definitely need to check out [b:Requiem Infernal|44180899|Requiem Infernal (The Dark Coil)|Peter Fehervari|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1572780052l/44180899._SY75_.jpg|68724569].

My biggest issue is that, for the most part, this collection felt like excerpts from longer formatted novels rather than actual short stories.
