Thanh dao and her sister arrive in England thinking that they can have a better life than they have in Vietnam. However the reality of the situation is different. Thanh is brought to a small cottage that is surrounded by open fields and space but she’s trapped by Len and nobody knows that she’s there. Len is vile and keeps track of her ever move and is vicious towards her when things don’t go his way. She know she must leave for her daughters sake escape seems impossible but when things change drastically she enlists help to do so. This is harrowing at times but compelling at other points.

When i initially heard about all of the hype surrounding this book, I didn’t believe that it could be as good as expected. However, this book as a very strong five stars for me.
Although this book is relatively short at only 250ish pages, the story captured within that short space is phenomenal. It really took me on a journey and i felt that no details were spared.
The story surrounds the main character ‘Jane’, and her current life with her captor. I truly felt all of the emotions portrayed through the authors writing, and the dialogue between characters was very well written.
There are several plot twists throughout the story, a couple of those i definitely didn’t expect. Overall, the book came to a satisfying ending and i was left thinking not only about what happened in this book; but real life human trafficking and the thousands of unheard stories and lives effected by this daily.
I will definitely be picking up further books written by this author.

At once unbearable and unputdownable, I found this book very difficult to read and yet flew through it in two sittings. I couldn’t bear to read on, nor could I bear to look away. It is compelling and page-turning and I was rooting for the protagonist throughout. It’s written in such a way that kept me reading, but the subject matter means I won’t ever pick it up again…
Loses stars for me as I’m struggling to decide whether it was a necessary way to shed light on a very real-world issue or whether it’s just trauma porn.
