I've had this on my TBR for so long and finally got to finish it!! Dark but powerful, this book gave me lots of Room vibes as a Vietnamese immigrant woman is stolen and held captive for years by an English farmer.

Suffering from a broken ankle that never gets treated, the woman he calls 'Jane' (not her actual name) is forced to wait on her captor as he doles out pain pills sparingly. When she gets pregnant and gives birth to a baby, Jane is determined more than ever to escape for the sake of her daughter.

Taut, disturbing and intense, this story had me rushing through to see how it would all end. Great on audio narrated by Sarah Lam and highly recommended.

Wow! What read. This book put me through it. The whole time I was reading it, I was hoping Thanh Dao (renamed "Jane" by her captor) and then her baby would make it to the end.
Thanh Dao has been a prisoner of Leonard's (Lenn) for years. 7 to be exact.
Her and her sister were tricked and trafficked from Vietnam to the UK. When the book opens, she only has a few items that bring her some sort of comfort and remind her of the family she lost: letters from her sister, her ID, pictures of her parents, etc. Lenn burns one by one them when she breaks the rules he has set.
They go through a daily twisted routine with Lenn pretending that him holding a woman hostage, making her into a slave and assaulting her is normal.
Thanh Dao's ankle is injured from Lenn shattering it. She can hardly run away (especially while pregnant and with a baby) as Lenn's home is a farm with really nothing around it. But after he kidnaps another woman named Cynthia (which garners a lot of attention) Thanh Dao sees her window to possible freedom.
The subject matter is tough to get through. But it's well written and has a satisfying conclusion. You'll be rooting for Thanh Dao as she makes it through her days in her prison. It also made me wonder how many people were in similar situations. Remembering how strong the women like the three in Cleveland and Jaycee Dugard had to have been to get through their ordeals.

For such a short read, this is anything but an easy read, which follows the viewpoint of ‘Jane’; and straight away you know that’s not her name. You learn she’s trapped with no means of escape, suffering emotional, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her captor. So it goes without saying, there are triggers galore with this one.

This is such an gripping read; I had to know what happened to Jane and her captor. The world he has created for Jane is heartbreaking as you learn of her life now and glimpses of her life before. You’re with her every step of the way.

What stuck with me was her perseverance and determination to hold onto her identity and her memories. And her possessions are her only connection to these and her life before. She is made of strong stuff. And the horrific life she’s forced to endure is uncomfortable and shocking. I’m grateful that this is such a short read. And whilst the abuse she suffers is mostly dealt with off page, it leads you to imagine your own torments for her.

This was my first Will Dean novel and he’s definitely an author I want to read more of.
