Angela Y. Davies makes me proud to be a Communist.

I think this book strongly conveys the significance of Angela not only for the Black Liberation movement, but also for the Communist movement. Even when all of the US forces conspired against her and attempted to frame her for a crime she did not commit, Angela was victorious. As Black woman and as a professor of Philosophy at UCLA, to proclaim herself a Communist made Angela a symbol of resistance. Reading about her trial today, as well as the injustices outlined in this collection, in the wake of the second wave of Black Lives Matter protests, figures such as Angela Davies and other Black Panthers are an inspiration.

If They Come in the Morning is an insightful and comprehensive portrayal of the prison system in the United States. As a collection, it features essays, letters and poems by a wide range of authors, including contributions by James Baldwin, Herbert Marcuse, various Black Panthers, the Soledad Brothers, and even a letter by a black matron working at the prison where Angela Davies was confined. Despite the varied authors, the collection is consistent and smoothly follows a thread, from an analysis of the Soledad Brothers to the trial of Angela Davies.

Some of these essays read as very much of a specific time and place, perhaps a time where there was a more... uncritical.. embrace of communism and international communist leaders. But it's also a fascinating (depressing?) tour through some of the lesser known and actively suppressed parts of black american history.

Also, a lot of definite mixed emotions to be reading that people in the 1970s were just as convinced we had reached The End of America as we are today.
